Capon Springs
Volunteer Fire & Rescue
Capon Springs Volunteer fire & Rescue also know as Company 8 is located in Hampshire County, West Virginia.
Capon Springs Vol. Fire and Rescue has been dedicated to serving our local and surrounding community since it was founded in October of 1966. We have approximately 20 active members and operate two basic life support ambulances, one engine, one rescue engine, one 3,300 gallon tanker, two brush trucks, and an air/light support cascade trailer.

HISTORY OF OUR EQUIPMENT THEN & NOW
IN 1966 THE NEED FOR A FIRE COMPANY BECAME APPARENT WHEN THERE WAS A FIRE ON THE KLINE PROPERTY (NOW FALLING RUN) OFF MILK ROAD NEAR YELLOW SPRING. TED AUSTIN, FRANK BRILL, AND JUNIOR DUNLAP WERE THE FIRST TO RESPOND WITH MININUM EQUIPMENT.
AN 1940-41 AMERICAN-FRANZ ENGINE PUMPER TANKER (800 GAL.)WAS THE FIRST TRUCK PURCHASED FROM THE BRANDY WINE FIRE COMPANY NEAR FRANKLIN WV. STEVE AUSTIN WAS A VERY INVOLVED BY THIS TIME GETTING THE FIRE COMPANY UP AND RUNNING.
THEN A 1947 FORD FLAT BED TRUCK WAS PURCHASED FROM A MR. HENSHAW OF HIGHVIEW THAT NEEDED A PUMP. IN 1943
IT WAS KEPT AT THE CAPON SPRINGS & FARMS HOTEL IN A BLOCK BUILDING UNTIL THE PRESENT FIRE HOUSE WAS BUILT.
THE STORY GOES THE MEN TOOK TURNS KEEPING THE BUILDING WARM USING A COAL STOVE IN THE WINTER TO PREVENT THE WATER FROM FREEZING, GEORGE BRILL WAS VERY GOOD AT KEEPING AND TAKING CARE OF THE TRUCK.
LATER, A 1953 FORD PUMPER WITH A 2 STAGE PUMP WAS PURCHASED FROM ASHBY FIRE EQUIPMENT CO. IN MARYLAND. THE TANK OF THE 1947 TRUCK WAS SWITCHED TO A 1958 FORD PURCHASED FROM C.C.CLEM FOR $600.00 FOR THE WORK.
IN 1983 (8-11) A 1968 CHEVOLET 500 GAL. PUMPER WAS PURCHASED FROM CHARLIE SITES TO REPLACE THE 1953 FORD.
IN 1987 (8-20) A 1979 FORD TANKER (1500 GAL.) WAS PURCHASED FROM A ROUND HILL VA. FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR $15,000.
1979 BRUSH TRUCK WAS PURCHASED FROM A FROM A GAINSBORO VA. BODY SHOP AND BEFORE THIS A 1970'S FORD VAN WAS USED TO TRANSPORT SHOVELS AND RAKES TO THE FIRE SCENE.
IN 1992 A 1983 (8-40) CHEVY 1 TON RESCUE TRUCK WAS DONATED TO US BY THE WINCHESTER RESCUE SQUAD.
IN 1993 (OLD 8-70) THE FIRST VEHICLE TO BE USED AS A IST. RESPONDER WAS A 1979 4X4 VAN AMBULANCE GIVEN BY AL VERNON. AS MEMBERS BECAME EMT'S IN 1996 IT WAS PUT INTO SERVICE AS AN AMBULANCE. THE FIRST CALL WAS TO HYLA STEVENS AS REMEMBERED.
1995 (OLD 8-71) A 1989 BOX AMBULANCE CAME FROM MCLEAN VA. RESCUE SQUAD.
1998 (RESCUE/ENGINE 8) A 1984 4X4 CHEVY CAME FROM LAWRENCVILLE WV. FIRE DEPT.
1998 (8-70) A 1984 4X4 VAN AMBULANCE WAS OBTAINED FROM THE MIDDLETOWN VA. FIRE & RESCUE.
IN 2000 MOBILE (8) A CHEVY CAR WAS DONATED BY A STERLING VA. RESCUE DEPT.
IN 2000 (8-71) A 2000 NEW 4X4 AMBULANCE WAS PURCHASED .
IN 2001 ENGINE (8) A 2000 INTERNATIONAL PUMPER WAS PURCHASED.
IN 2005 A 1979 FORD BRUSHED TRUCK WAS PURCHASED FROM THE MARSHALL VA. FIRE DEPT.
IN 2004 A 2005 INTERNATIONAL TANKER (NEW) WAS PURCHASED. 2006 A 1989 FORD BRUSH TRUCK FROM BUCKHALL VA. FIRE DEPT. ARRIVED.
IN EARLY 1970'S A SMALL LOT LOCATED NEAR LUCILLE CROUSE HOME WAS PURCHASED FROM CLARENCE SINE FOR $1000.TO BUILD A FIRE HOUSE. IT BECAME EVIDENT TO CAPON SPRINGS & FARMS, SERIOUS PLANS FOR THE FIRE COMPANY WAS BEING CONSIDERED, THEN CAPON SPRINGS & FARMS SEEN THE NEED FOR THE FIRE COMPANY AND THEY DONATED THE LAND WHERE OUR BUILDING IS TODAY. RESIDENTS WORKED HARD RAISING FUNDS FOR THE BUILDING BLOCKS, TREES WERE DONATED BY THEU. S.FOREST SERVICE WHICH LOCAL RESIDENTS CUT AND SAWED FOR THE TIMBER. THOSE WHO HELPED BUILD THE STATION BECAME MEMBERS OR HONORARY STATIS.
THE LADIES AUXILLARY WAS FORMED MAY 9 1979 AND CONTINUES TO SUPPORT BY RAISING MONEY WITH FUND RAISERS. MEETINGS WERE HELD AT THE COMMUNITY (NOW HERITAGE BAPTIST CHURCH. BINGO WAS STARTED ON FEB. 8 1980 AT THE COMMUNITY BUILDING WITH WILLARD SPAID THE CALLER. AN AUCTION WAS A 1ST. ALSO WITH EVERYONE GIVING AN ITEM TO BE AUCTIONED OFF BY ALSTON NES-MITH AS AUCTIONEER. APPLE BUTTER MAKING STARTED IN 1979 UP AT THE CAPON HOTEL AND MANY DINNERS TO FOLLOW.
